Approaching Kareedouw from the Humansdorp side, about 2 km before the town, along the R62 you will find the Assegaaibosch Station. ( a relic of the days when Apple trains used to travel the Langkloof taking fruit away to markets ) Turn-off to the right and cross the Krom River low level bridge , then turn left and follow the gravel road as it leads you up a moderate mountain pass, called Zuuranys Berg.

This particular road section has wonderful fynbos displays, but often burns due to the proximity of commercial farms. Good views of the Langkloof can be found along the way.

ï»¿ Crossing the mountain devide you leave the Langkloof behind and enter the start of the Kouga's from the Langkloof .Turn left at the next gravel road intersection Here the road winds its way through the commercial farming section of the Kouga's until the Kouga River Poort Pass is reached. Mountain views of the Kouga, Baviaanskloof and Winterhoek mountains are seen along this road section. A vast rugged mountain panarama as far as the eye can see.

Kouga River Poort Pass , awesome scenic highlight of this route. take care along the steep sections of this pass. Here the moody Kouga River cuts a spectacular gorge towards the Baviaanskloof. This bubbling, quiet river, can turn in to a raging flood after heavy rains in the upper, mountain catchment areas ! After crossing the river, take the next left hand exit, and head out, into the Wilderness towards Baviaans Lodge.

The road gradually deteriorates as it gets deeper into the Kouga's. The vegetation turns to a mix of fynbos with East Cape bushveld, some stunning displays of Proteas are seen along the road side. After passing the exit to Kougberg Kraal, ( Joubertskraal farm )  the Lodge is a further 6 km along the road. Here the road becomes a single lane " farm track " , as it travels along a small valley, running next to the mountain slopes. The start of a very steep descent into Doringboom Valley, heralds your arrival at Baviaans Lodge, nestling in the dense Indigenous Forest, below the mighty Kouga Mountain range, stunning Baviaans accommodation destination in the Baviaanskloof area
