Unique aspects of the Baviaans-Kouga 4x4
and 2X4 trail routes

Finding the best route to the Baviaanskloof and Baviaans accommodation, something different, unique and challenging, is more than half the challenge of visiting the Kloof itself. The Baviaanskloof is special, A World Heritage Site, diverse and spectacular. The Baviaans-Kouga 4x4 trail and 2x4 Baviaans Trail  Travel Route adds credance to this wildernes region and offers a different perspective to entering the Baviaanskloof, something not viewed or experienced elsewhere . Its a little different and challenging with its " Fynbos  4x4 route" joining the main R332, Baviaanskloof Road, in the heart of the Baviaans, 2x4 Bakkies with experienced drivers can also do this 2x4 trail route, inot the Baviaanskloof as an adventure challenge.

Travelling in from Patensie in the East, you have the spectacular Groot Revier Poort, a marvelous natural feature. From the Willowmore Western side, the red rock faces of the Nuwekloof pass welcome you into the Kloof.

The Baviaans -Kouga travel route offers you a stunning Baviaanskloof accommodation venue at Baviaans Lodge and brings you into the Baviaans from the blue ocean, rocky shoreline of the Tsitiskamma, and the meandering R62 ( one of the prettiest scenic routes in the country). The 2X4 Baviaans Trail gravel route, starting at the Assegaaibosch Station, on the R62, near Kareedouw, gradually winds its way towards the ancient Kouga Mountains, through the spectacular Kouga Poort and out to Baviaans Lodge, an awesome wilderness retreat and Baviaans accommodation destination, bordering the Baviaanskloof Reserve. From here, you take the little known Baviaans-Kouga 4x4 trail, with its stunning Fynbos environs, into the heart of the Baviaanskloof. Unique and spectacular, the " Fynbos Entrance " to the Kloof.

This route appears to be centuries old, maybe tens of thousands of years. Mussel shells, and paintings in ancient shelters indicate movement by the San peoples, many years ago. In more recent times, discoveries in the 1970's show Boer commando's , probably belonging to General Smuts, used this mountain path. Today, a new breed of explorer, keen to discover natures best kept secrets, travels this winding, mountain track with its stunning back to nature setting. The " slow living " travel on gravel approach we all look for ! Baviaans Lodge is the ultimate wilderness Baviaanskloof accommodation retreat, off the main Baviaanskloof road, remote and undiscovered Baviaans guest lodge accommodation venue, on the Baviaans Kouga 4x4 trail.
